PORTFOLIO BASICS

How to build a portfolio that works for you and the market you want to be in.

1️⃣ DO YOU REALLY NEED A PORTFOLIO?

You do not need a portfolio to apply to agencies — especially if you’ve never worked in the industry. For beginners, it’s completely normal to start only with digitals.

However, a portfolio becomes important when:

  • you start working freelance
  • you already have an agency
  • you want to improve the quality of jobs you get

If you’re a beginner, this guide helps you understand what a proper portfolio looks like. If you’re already working, it helps you refine and upgrade it.

2️⃣ THINK MARKET FIRST

When structuring a portfolio, always think about the fashion category you want to be signed in.

Most models can work in more than one category, but your portfolio must still feel intentional.

A good rule
  • Look at brands you want to work with
  • Study their visuals, campaigns, editorials
  • Shape your portfolio so it fits their world

Your portfolio should speak the same visual language as the clients you want.

3️⃣ WHAT A STRONG PORTFOLIO SHOWS

A portfolio is not just about looking good. It shows:

  • you
  • your versatility
  • your ability to sell a product

At the same time, it filters which jobs you are suitable for.

Strong portfolios usually include

  • Test shoot images where you are shown clearly
  • Editorial-style images
  • Optional: campaigns, magazines, runway, lookbooks (if you have them)
4️⃣ IMAGE SELECTION (LESS, BUT BETTER)
Golden rules
  • First image: clean headshot (natural makeup, minimal styling)
  • Include: headshot, ¾ shot, full body
  • Avoid repeating the same pose, light, angle or mood

From one shoot, use maximum 1–2 images — only the strongest ones.

Variety matters more than quantity.

5️⃣ TEST SHOOTS & PHOTOGRAPHERS

If you are signed, your agency will usually guide you:

  • test shoots
  • editorials
  • portfolio direction

If you’re not signed:

  • you can collaborate with photographers
  • or pay for a test shoot

If you pay, always check:

  • does the photographer know how to shoot models?
  • what’s included in the package?

For a basic portfolio, you usually need:

  • 3 outfits
  • 3 different backgrounds

Clean, simple, effective.

6️⃣ HOW TO PRESENT YOUR PORTFOLIO

Traditionally, agencies provide a physical book. A very strong option today is having your portfolio on an iPad.

For an online version, a clean personal model page is extremely effective.

One page with:

  • your information
  • measurements
  • digitals
  • portfolio images
  • videos

Easy to send. Easy to view. Easy to scout.
